La Comisi\u00f3n Europea (CE) ha fijado el objetivo de que todos los coches y furgonetas nuevos matriculados en Europa sean de emisiones cero para 2035. Esto ha supuesto una importante presi\u00f3n para la industria del autom\u00f3vil, ya que las nuevas normas sobre emisiones de CO\u00b2 tambi\u00e9n exigir\u00e1n una reducci\u00f3n del 55% de las emisiones medias para 2030. Satisfacer la creciente demanda de veh\u00edculos el\u00e9ctricos (VE) -que podr\u00edan representar entre el 25% y el 50% de la producci\u00f3n de veh\u00edculos- exige una actuaci\u00f3n inmediata e innovadora del sector. <\/p>\n

La transici\u00f3n a los VE se enfrenta a retos que van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la producci\u00f3n de bater\u00edas, la ansiedad por la autonom\u00eda y el desarrollo de infraestructuras. Aunque \u00e9stas son preocupaciones fundamentales, la escasez de materiales y la necesidad de reducir la dependencia de los combustibles f\u00f3siles en la fabricaci\u00f3n complican a\u00fan m\u00e1s el cambio. Todos los materiales y procesos que intervienen en la producci\u00f3n de autom\u00f3viles deben acabar siendo menos dependientes de los recursos cada vez m\u00e1s escasos y de la energ\u00eda de los combustibles f\u00f3siles. Esto presenta un complejo conjunto de retos que deben abordarse para garantizar la sostenibilidad de la industria de los VE. <\/p>\n

Consciente de ello, la organizaci\u00f3n alemana de investigaci\u00f3n Fraunhofer IWU, junto con la Alianza Europea de Agrupaciones Ligeras (ELCA<\/a>), impulsada por Bax, inici\u00f3 un esfuerzo a escala europea. Cuatro de las mayores empresas automovil\u00edsticas de Europa se unieron a la iniciativa, reconociendo que los objetivos de CO\u00b2 de la CE exigen un planteamiento colaborativo en el que todos pongan manos a la obra. <\/p>\n

Esto plantea la siguiente pregunta: \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 los fabricantes de equipos originales (OEM) europeos no pueden hacer la transici\u00f3n a las emisiones netas cero de forma independiente? Aunque disponen de importantes recursos, depender \u00fanicamente de ellos plantea dificultades, sobre todo en la transici\u00f3n a los materiales secundarios. Las preguntas clave son: \u00bfDe d\u00f3nde sacamos las materias primas secundarias? \u00bfSu calidad cumplir\u00e1 las normas de seguridad? \u00bfHay suficientes para satisfacer la creciente demanda de VE? El seguimiento de los or\u00edgenes y el ciclo de vida de los materiales es esencial, y la reutilizaci\u00f3n de los materiales al final de su vida \u00fatil (EoL) sin reciclarlos podr\u00eda ser revolucionaria. By sector, the aerospace industry has set firm targets requiring airlines to cut emissions by 55% below 2020 levels by 2030. Likewise, the automotive industry is transforming itself in line with the EU Climate Law and the EU Green Deal where there are obligations to achieve the targets of net-zero emissions by 2050 and CO2 emissions per vehicle fleet. Similarly, the building sector faces strict energy efficiency standards under the EU Green Deal, aiming for all new buildings to be \u00abzero-emission\u00bb by 2030, driving innovations in insulation, smart energy systems, and lightweight composites. Finally, the energy sector is now under pressure to increase the rate of renewable energy integration while ensuring that the materials used in the infrastructure are also sustainable. Although these policies are daunting, they also present opportunities for innovation.<\/p>\n

This regulatory push is driving industries towards the use of lightweight materials with multifunctional capabilities and circular designs to meet CO\u2082 targets. Sustainability has become synonymous with technological progress in all industries, leading to solutions that are not only long-lasting but effective, and versatile.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Bajo el tema de la convocatoria \u00abEnfoques de econom\u00eda circular para veh\u00edculos de emisiones cero\u00bb, ZEvRA (Zero Emission electric Vehicles enabled by haRmonised circulArity)<\/a> pretende mejorar la circularidad de los VE mediante el dise\u00f1o para el reciclaje y la reutilizaci\u00f3n. El proyecto pretende fomentar la concienciaci\u00f3n sobre los principios de la econom\u00eda circular y el an\u00e1lisis del ciclo de vida (ACV) en el transporte limpio, normalizar las m\u00e9tricas de circularidad en el sector de la automoci\u00f3n y desarrollar un prototipo de veh\u00edculo que utilice materiales v\u00edrgenes cero. <\/p>\n

El objetivo de ZEvRA es impulsar a Europa hacia una econom\u00eda digital, circular y clim\u00e1ticamente neutra, reduciendo la dependencia de las materias primas y fomentando al mismo tiempo la innovaci\u00f3n y las competencias en pr\u00e1cticas de econom\u00eda circular. Con una financiaci\u00f3n de 12 millones de euros de la CE, el proyecto comenz\u00f3 en enero de 2024 y tiene una duraci\u00f3n prevista de tres a\u00f1os. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The shift towards a circular economy is transforming the automotive, aerospace, construction and energy sectors by promoting resource efficiency, waste reduction and the reuse and recycling of materials. Circularity in composites aims to minimise environmental impact, extend product life cycles, and foster closed-loop systems that reduce reliance on finite resources while enhancing sustainability.<\/p>\n

Efforts to reuse and upcycle secondary materials in composite manufacturing are gaining importance. Innovations in recycling processes and material tracking systems, such as Materials ID Passports, are enabling better recovery of valuable components and improved lifecycle management. This transition is supported by strategies like integrating recycled polymers, remanufacturing components and adopting bio-based and recyclable thermoset materials.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Solutions include mono-material concepts for easier recovery and hybridisation strategies that enhance bio-based composites\u2019 performance. Designing for circularity\u2014through modular components, easy disassembly, and reversible bonding techniques\u2014is key to improving recyclability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

These innovations, combined with efforts to develop bio-based alternatives and improve recycling techniques, are driving a shift towards sustainable production models.<\/p>\n

By combining material innovation, advanced manufacturing and circular design principles, industries can create composites that align with sustainability goals. These approaches not only reduce environmental impacts but also drive innovation, economic growth and resilience across the value chain, paving the way for a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the construction sector, composites often entail high initial costs during manufacturing due to the needs for specialised equipment, the patenting of new materials is both highly expensive and immensely time consuming as it may take up to several years. Prefabrication and modular construction further save time, reduce labour costs, and minimise on-site disruptions compared to traditional approaches. Complex structures can offer long-term benefits, such as new materials with colour-changing properties to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. For instance, a layered composite of copper foil, plastic, and graphene adjusts its infrared colour and heat absorption based on temperature, cooling interiors on hot days and insulating them on cold days.<\/p>\n

The aerospace sector faces high maintenance costs due to the stringent safety requirements and complex systems. Advanced analytics and machine learning further optimise processes, reduce waste, and refine lightweighting, helping airlines lower fuel consumption and increase payload capacity. Digital tools like generative design and topology optimisation enable lighter, more efficient structures by optimising material use and exploring innovative geometries, improving performance while reducing weight. Predictive maintenance leverages data and machine learning to foresee equipment failures, cutting downtime, costs, and enhancing safety.<\/p>\n

Transporting and installing renewable energy components such as wind turbine blades and solar panels is costly and complex, particularly in remote or offshore locations. In solar PV, freight and installation costs vary but typically make up 4-20% of total costs. Using composite materials reduce component weight, making transportation and installation easier and more affordable. The wind turbine sector is exploring sectional turbine blades to cut transportation costs and enable reuse of non-degraded parts at the end of life. Similarly, lightweight, modular, and flexible solar panels are being developed for rapid deployment, though further research is needed to improve their efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to rigid panels.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
