Working with 12 partners from the public and private sectors, our Mobility and Sharing teams are supporting one of Europe’s first initiatives bringing together cities, mobility providers and people with reduced mobility to co-design new solutions to make shared mobility options accessible and comfortable to all.
Shared bikes, scooters and vehicles are already transforming the way that young, able-bodied people move around the city. But these sustainable, flexible, and low-emission services are far from suitable for everyone. Gaps in design and policy mean that a large majority of these solutions are used exclusively by young urban adults; with children and families, the elderly and the physically impaired left behind.
Approach
Bax is supporting one of Europe’s leading initiatives to bring shared mobility to everyone, Shared Mobility for ALL (SMALL). Through co-creation and by taking a people-focused approach, the initiative will explore how to make shared mobility accessible to children, families, the elderly and physically impaired people – part of a wider group classified as people with reduced mobility (PRM). Six pilots in six cities will then deploy accessible sharing solutions, including:
- The City of Amsterdam will pilot new ways to deliver accessibility information and in-journey support to people with reduced mobility through a MaaS app.
- Brest Metropole will support upscaling of a city-wide rickshaw service for reduced mobility users, Vélo&Co
- Belgian organisation Mpact will use co-creation to improve its service Mobitwin
- De Fietsambassade will improve TriVelo, its taxi service for people with reduced mobility
- Capital Region Denmark will pilot new mobility options for PRMs between train stations and hospitals
- Amsterdam’s transport authority Vervorregio Amsterdam will pilot ways to catalogue accessible equipment like escalators, lifts, stairs, equipment of vehicle to help reduced mobility users plan better journeys
Impact
While shared mobility transforms the way young, able-bodied people move around cities, many groups are being left behind. Working with municipalities, shared providers and transport authorities, we’re transforming the mobility narrative with concrete solutions and policies with SMALL.
