Building the roadmap to Europe’s green transition in advanced materials

Client: EMIRI (The Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative)

Date: 2019

Location: Europe-wide

To support Europe in achieving its climate targets, Bax facilitated the development of a strategic roadmap for the future of advanced materials. The roadmap identifies research and innovation priorities in advanced materials required to accelerate clean energy and sustainable mobility solutions. It has served as the basis for Europe’s research priorities and allocation of relevant budget, as well as guiding stakeholders across the industry, academia, and policy sectors toward shared goals for Europe’s green transition.

Challenge

Europe’s shift to a climate-neutral economy hinges on breakthroughs in advanced materials that enhance the efficiency, performance, and sustainability of clean energy and mobility solutions. However, the sector faces complex challenges, including the need for significant investment, alignment on research priorities, and addressing technological gaps across the value chain. A cohesive, long-term strategy was essential to unite stakeholders and focus resources on high-impact areas.

Approach

On behalf of EMIRI, Bax conducted an extensive analysis of Europe’s advanced materials sector, gathering insights from industry leaders, research institutions, and policymakers. The resulting roadmap highlights priority areas in technologies and advanced materials used in batteries, hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers, solar energy, and wind energy. Through stakeholder workshops and in-depth consultations, the roadmap also incorporates recommendations for funding strategies and policy initiatives, positioning it as a comprehensive guide to Europe’s R&I strategy.

Impact

The roadmap has catalysed significant momentum across Europe’s advanced materials landscape:

  • Guided over close to €1 billion in targeted public investments towards priority R&D areas
  • Informed national and EU-level policy frameworks
  • Established a clear vision for stakeholders, helping to streamline collaboration across sectors

By delivering a unified strategy for advanced materials development, Bax and EMIRI have empowered stakeholders to drive Europe’s transition to a greener, more sustainable economy, strengthening Europe’s leadership in clean technology.
