Compartiment: deploying a sharing station in a Barcelona apartment building

Clients: City of Barcelona and Cevasa

Date: March 2025

Location: Barcelona

Bax Innovation, in partnership with the housing provider Cevasa, won a grant from Barcelona’s innovation agency (BitHabitat) to pilot a sharing station within a residential building – a first for both Barcelona and Spain. The sharing station has now been operating since March 2025, giving residents free access to cleaning, games and sports equipment, as well as other everyday items such as ladders and sewing machines.

Challenge

Given the lack of local precedents and sharing station infrastructure providers, the project faced a steep learning curve. Bax Innovation tackled this by partnering with the UK-based startup Library of Things to bring their model to Barcelona.

The primary challenge lay in navigating complex deployment requirements -from ensuring technical stability and defining service terms to managing the backend logistics necessary for reliable day-to-day operations.

Approach

To deploy the sharing station, Bax Innovation selected and prioritised suitable buildings, ran on-site co-creation sessions with residents to shape the offer, and developed the “Compartiment” brand alongside all communications and marketing materials. This was complemented by user research with both regular users and non-users to understand incentives and barriers, and culminated in a Barcelona event bringing together different sharing economy initiatives.
