Bax secured funding and supports Active Cities, a collaborative innovation project on a quest to improve active mobility use and experiences in Northern European cities. The project brings together 8 municipalities and 3 knowledge organisations to test and mainstream the positive impact of small, cost-effective spatial transformations and social innovations. Ultimately, Active Cities strives to create stimulating, liveable and human-scale streets and spaces that are attractive to both cyclists and pedestrians.

Challenge

Active mobility (walking, cycling) is the most climate-neutral, healthy and accessible way to move about; it’s also a very feasible mode of transportation for urban trips of less than 5kms. However, traditional car-oriented urban planning discourages cycling and walking in cities through a lack of proper infrastructure and little social measures to attract desired citizens.

Approach

Bax supports 8 cities from across 7 countries in testing tactical urban transformations and social innovations that increase the quality of urban spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Cities test approaches on urban streets and multimodal hubs, aided by expert partners in urban design, behavioural sciences and mobility policy. Approaches and pilots are packaged into policy briefs relevant to municipalities across Europe.
