Sebastiaan van Herk

Sebastiaan van Herk has 17 years of experience in accelerating innovation & international collaborations to create Value from Science & Technology.

Sebastiaan is Partner at Bax & Company and he leads the 2 focus areas Climate & Environment and Smart & Data. Since 2004, he has defined, coordinated and delivered R&D, innovation, business and policy projects for various multinational companies and SMEs; national, regional & local governments; and research institutes. These include over 50 European and global collaborative projects with well over €100M in innovation funding, that have guided and mobilised a multiple in public and private investments in urban and infrastructure projects. His current project portfolio comprises climate adaptation, water and land management, circular economy, sustainable procurement, infrastructure and sustainable construction, smart city, digital public infrastructure, blockchain, open source and open data.

Sebastiaan holds a PhD degree from UNESCO-IHE & TU Delft in Climate Adaptation & Flood Risk Management and an MSc degree (cum laude) in Technology, Policy & Management from TU Delft. He studied Industrial Engineering at the UPC Barcelona and Economics at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He is a founding member of the Flood Resilience Group at IHE-Delft. Sebastiaan has delivered multiple research projects and over 30 scientific and professional publications.

He has been appointed Advocate for UN-ISDR in Resilience and Expert for UN Environment in sustainable procurement. He has conceptualised and developed the Global Center on Adaptation as external coordinator since its inception, creating a partnership of 160 international organisations. He contributes to educational and capacity building programmes. He is an experienced speaker and facilitator of workshops at international conferences. Previously he worked 2 years in R&D and innovation departments in the construction industry at HILTI AG (Liechtenstein) and Dura Vermeer Group (Holland).

Sebastiaan speaks English, Spanish, German, Dutch and Catalan fluently and has notions of French.
