Polymer composites play a crucial role in various industries, offering high strength-to-weight ratios and durability. However, the sustainability of these materials remains a challenge due to complex recycling processes and limited circularity pathways. On behalf of SusChem, Bax developed a white paper addressing the current state, challenges, and strategic actions required to enhance the circularity of composites. This document serves as a key resource for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers, providing insights into technological, economic, and regulatory solutions to advance composite sustainability in Europe.
The increasing use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in aerospace, automotive, construction, and renewable energy sectors has led to significant waste accumulation. Annually, 40,000 tonnes of composite waste are landfilled in Europe, with 40% of total production wasted as scrap or defective parts. The difficulty of separating fibres from resin, the lack of scalable recycling technologies, high costs, and regulatory fragmentation hinder circularity efforts. Without intervention, composite waste management will remain a major sustainability challenge for Europe.

Approach
Bax performed desk research and worked with SusChem stakeholders to analyse Europe’s composite circularity landscape, identifying key technologies, market players, and regulatory gaps. The study mapped composite applications, assessed recycling processes such as solvolysis and pyrolysis, and highlighted best practices for reuse, repurposing, and eco-design. Additionally, the research outlined opportunities for reducing raw material dependence, improving fibre recovery, and fostering a harmonised European policy framework. The resulting white paper provides a structured strategy to support a sustainable and economically viable composite lifecycle.
Impact
The Polymer Composites Circularity White Paper has influenced key discussions on advancing sustainability in Europe’s polymer composite industry. Its contributions include:
- Contributing to policy recommendations on a European level
- Promoting sustainable practices in industry
- Encouraging industry collaboration
