Bax is supporting a partnership of seven public transport authorities and cities to transform public transportation for the 129 million EU citizens residing in rural areas. Led by the Province of Overijssel, the partnership will implement and improve regional transport policies for rural services, using proven best practices in governance, financing, stakeholder engagement, and end-user support from across Europe.
129 million Europeans living in rural areas are increasingly stranded in ‘transport deserts’, with rising costs leading to inadequate public transport and a dependence on private vehicles. For vulnerable groups including the elderly, disabled, or economically disadvantaged, this leads to social and economic exclusion as they struggle to reach the shops or the doctor.
Approach
With funding secured by Bax through Interreg Europe, the partnership will analyse current policies, develop a standardised framework for rural mobility, and create policy tools enabling public authorities to integrate demand-responsive transport, ride-sharing, and MaaS into their existing services.
