Bax’s Battery Circularity Game: innovative roleplay to unlock real-world solutions

Date: 2023 – ongoing

Location: Europe-wide

With the looming challenge of managing an exponentially growing number of end-of-life EV batteries with over 100,000 tonnes by 2030, Bax’s Battery Circularity Game equips stakeholders to understand and navigate complex sustainability and business demands through immersive role-play scenarios. By simulating real-world decision-making and partnerships, the game enables participants to develop actionable strategies for challenges like battery passport adoption, reuse versus recycling decisions, State of Health (SoH) assessment, transport cost reduction, and navigating regulatory complexities.

Challenge

The rapid growth of electric vehicle adoption presents a significant future challenge: managing end-of-life batteries in a sustainable and economically viable way. From accurate State-of-Health (SoH) assessment to reducing the costs of used battery transportation, stakeholders need innovative approaches to address evolving regulations and develop business models that support circularity. Both seasoned industry leaders and new market entrants face the task of adapting their operations to keep pace with the demand for sustainable solutions and operating these with profitable business models.

Approach

Developed through extensive research involving interviews, site visits, and analysis of the battery value chain, Bax’s Battery Circularity Game immerses participants in real-world scenarios where they assume more than 20 different stakeholder roles across the battery circularity ecosystem, such as recyclers, regulators, and manufacturers. Each participant, equipped with financial and operational constraints, will have to set up collaborations with other stakeholders to solve critical circularity challenges, from identifying suitable repurposing partners and adapting to regulatory shifts to managing transport logistics. By stepping into these roles, participants experience firsthand the complexities of the battery lifecycle, gain strategic insights into circularity dynamics, and leave with practical, out-of-the-box solutions tailored to their own operational needs.

Impact

The Battery Circularity Game has so far achieved notable outcomes:

  • Engaged over 100 stakeholders at major industry events such as the 2023 and 2024 editions of the Future Battery Forum, the 2023 Battery Innovation Days, as well as project meetings and student hackathons.
  • Organised a series of customised game workshops for commercial teams of large industrial players within the value chain (including Syensqo).
  • Created a repository of solutions, from technical innovations to policy ideas, to address circularity challenges.
  • Equipped participants with actionable insights to improve their market positioning and business models.

Through the game, Bax is fostering industry readiness for the circular economy, supporting Europe’s sustainability goals, and helping organisations stay ahead of regulatory and market shifts.

The Battery Circularity Game is a very well-organised and informative workshop that puts you in the shoes of various stakeholder types. It’s a great exercise for brainstorming new ideas for services and partnerships.

– Dr. Xavier Kohll,  Co-founder & CTO at Circu Li-ion

The game was amazing. Acting like a different stakeholder is not something we do every day which helped me understand what value we can offer to new partners.

– William Bergh, CEO & Founder at Cling Systems
