We supported VHL to reduce the carbon emissions and enhance carbon sequestration of degraded and mismanaged peatlands across Europe. CConnects created a market ecosystem by bringing private actors and landowners together.
3% of the world’s land surface is covered by peatlands that store almost twice as much carbon as all of the Earth’s standing forests. 1/3 the global CO2 emission is caused by the degradation of peatlands where land practices drain and strip the peat for energy use, crop production, and animal husbandry.
Approach
Prevent the rapid degradation of and carbon loss from peatlands in North-West Europe through implementing innovative business models that drive a more sustainable management of the land.
Impact
Reduction of 84 tons of CO2 emissions, development of a “Farmer2Market” programme (92 market actors involved) leading to 2,3M invested in peatland restoration, exploration of new innovative carbon-credit schemes in Europe.
Peatlands store more carbon than all of the world’s forests, and are hubs of biodiversity. A big problem facing peatlands & agriculture is the lack of implementable sustainable solutions that can provide sufficient income for farmers, while maintaining wet conditions. To tackle this CarbonConencts connected farmers and landowners to companies and businesses that can make climate-friendly practices a reality.
